Together, let us shape a brighter, more beautiful future for all.
Together, let us shape a brighter, more beautiful future for all.

One of the most frustrating aspects of social media platforms is how they have become double-edged swords for artists. On one hand, they offer unparalleled reach and visibility, providing a global stage for creative expression. On the other hand, they impose rigid structures and algorithms that prioritize virality over authenticity, often relegating genuine talent to the sidelines in favor of sensationalism. This issue goes beyond just artists; it affects creators as well. While some creators have mastered the art of “sensationalism”, many talented individuals remain in the shadows due to the workings of social platforms.

I don’t want to blame the algorithms for this phenomenon entirely. While they play a significant role, it’s not solely their fault if creators struggle for visibility. However, when it comes to artists, why should they have to contend with algorithms? Their primary focus should be enriching our lives with their emotions and thoughts expressed through art, rather than battling with digital mechanisms.

Instead of devoting most of their energy to their craft, artists, and creators find themselves allocating a considerable portion to navigating a labyrinth of algorithms and trends in pursuit of recognition and validation. Unfortunately, this pursuit often feels elusive because their meticulously crafted works of art are reduced to mere data points in the relentless chase for likes, shares, and follows. The whims of opaque algorithms ultimately dictate their fate, determining whether their creations will be seen by a handful of followers or lost in the vast expanse of “cyberspace”.

However, there is hope.

In January 2023, I first engaged with Hey, a decentralized social media platforms built on the Lens protocol. On January 6th, I posted my first entry in the garden. While it wasn’t my initial encounter with decentralized social media, as I had been a user of DeSo for some time, it was my first experience with a decentralized platform that truly excited me — one that I firmly believed could revolutionize the social media landscape. Amidst the chaos and noise of today's social media, decentralized ecosystems like Lens offer a glimmer of hope. For me, Lens is founded on principles of transparency, autonomy, and community empowerment, providing a sanctuary for creators exhausted by the algorithmic dominance of traditional social media. Within this digital garden, creativity flourishes, liberated from the confines of arbitrary algorithms and corporate interests.

While my enthusiasm for Lens has been unwavering, and I have consistently advocated for its potential for artists, I recall receiving an airdrop in my wallet approximately a couple of weeks ago (time seems to fly by so quickly that specific dates blur). I was fortunate enough to receive some $BONSAI, a “memecoin” slated to be regarded as Lens' cultural token, although this was not initially apparent. Upon witnessing the integration of Bonsai into the ecosystem and realizing its utility for collecting, tipping, earning, etc., I recognized that we stand on the brink of something extraordinary — a profound transformation whose full impact may not be immediately apparent.

While initially viewing it as a mere token, I began to recognize its potential as a symbol of liberation and creativity. Through Lens, artists already enjoy complete control over their content and distribution. With Bonsai, they can now also earn from their creations. The concept of monetizing one's posts, of sharing art directly on Lens' apps and earning from it, transcends mere likes, shares, or comments. It offers the prospect of artists earning from their work, irrespective of its perceived value. This has the potential for profound long-term effects on artists, collectors, enthusiasts, and the relationships between them. This seemingly simple token could deepen the connection between fans and artists, and between any user and creator, fostering genuine engagement and meaningful connections.

These tokens finally enable artists and creators to embody Ralph Waldo Emerson's words: “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” In the world Lens is building, artists have the chance to reclaim their authenticity, redefine success on their terms, and establish meaningful connections with audiences who appreciate their true essence, free from unnecessary obstacles.

I perceive today's social media landscape as a paradoxical web that ensnares artists. While these platforms provide unparalleled access to a global audience, they also subject creators to the fickle nature of algorithms that prioritize sensationalism over substance. In this environment, artistic expression often takes a backseat to clickbait and trending topics.

However, within the realm of decentralized social platforms, there lies hope for artists and creators to break free from the shackles of algorithmic oppression. Empowered by these platforms, they need only to be themselves to thrive. With ecosystems like Lens, and tokens such as Bonsai, artists gain a direct channel to monetize their work, reclaiming control over its content and distribution. Liberated from arbitrary algorithms dictating visibility and reach, they can showcase their creations to an audience that truly appreciates their talent and craftsmanship.

This newfound financial support provided by Bonsai is not merely a means to an end; it serves as a lifeline for artists striving to make a living from their passion. Whether through tips from appreciative fans or earnings from paid posts, Bonsai offers creators a sustainable source of income, enabling them to pursue their creative passions more freely. Freed from the pressure to conform to trends or cater to algorithmic whims, artists can now focus on what truly matters: their art.

Picture a world where artists are no longer bound by algorithmic biases, where they create not to appease algorithms but for their own fulfillment. In this world, emotional depth and boundless creativity reign, and artists are free to explore, innovate, and inspire without fear of censorship or commercialization. This is the vision that Lens, in “partnership” with Bonsai, is helping to realize—a world where artists are valued not just for their popularity, but for the depth of their creativity and the sincerity of their expression.

“I am seeking, I am striving, I am in it with all my heart,” are the words of the iconic Vincent Van Gogh, and they encapsulate the dedication that artists pour into their craft. Let us remember these words as we celebrate the empowerment offered to artists by a simple token and a new social ecosystem. With this union, artists can continue to seek, strive, and create with unwavering passion, knowing that their talent and dedication will be cherished and respected by a community that shares their vision for a more creative and just world.

Speaking about community...

I believe Bonsai will significantly impact this aspect as well. I view this simple token as the lifeblood of a vibrant and interconnected community, with a shared appreciation for creativity, authenticity, and mutual support at its core.

One of the most profound ways I see Bonsai fostering community, a realization that you may have also had, is through its ability to facilitate direct support between creators and their audience. Through tips and “paid collects”, users can express their appreciation for the content they love, forming a reciprocal relationship that transcends the transactional nature of traditional social media interactions. This direct exchange of value not only provides financial support to artists but also deepens the connection between creators and their audience, fostering a sense of belonging and shared ownership in the creative process.

Moreover, I envision these connections extending beyond just the artists and their admirers to encompass the broader community. This may result in a more tightly-knit Lens community, facilitated by shared interests and mutual support. Social ecosystems like these empower smaller artists to rise to prominence, allowing their voices to be heard. Consequently, individuals from diverse backgrounds have the opportunity to discover new favorite musicians, writers, or visual artists, thereby forming bonds through their shared passion. To illustrate this concept, imagine an artist offering those who have collected their work through Lens access to a private group; this could encourage increased interaction among users, forging connections and enriching the community. Ultimately, these developments lay the groundwork for a vibrant and inclusive community where diversity is celebrated, and creativity thrives.

Some of you may already be familiar with my desire for a more united world, tied by a shared love for creativity and expression, where we find strength in our similarities and inspiration in our differences. In the words of Maya Angelou, “We are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike.” It is through unions like Bonsai and Lens that we can embark on a journey of discovery, connection, and collective empowerment, knowing that together, we can build a more inclusive and vibrant community where every voice is heard and valued.

What I’ve discussed in the previous sections represents, at least for me, the power of the partnership between Lens and Bonsai, whose impact will be felt in time, not immediately. However, I believe there is more to it than what has been explored so far. It doesn’t end here, in my perspective...

If we observe the vast and often tumultuous landscape of the digital world, we find that for many artists, validation, and recognition have unfortunately become their currency. They perceive these metrics as a testament to the impact and significance of their creative endeavors. Yet, what many fail to realize is that genuine validation is often elusive, overshadowed by the relentless pursuit of likes, shares, and follows.

However, in the future of social media, particularly in “onchain” platforms, I envision the union of Lens and Bonsai as the bringer of true validation and recognition in this realm. Through this partnership, creators are not merely rewarded financially for their work; they are also bestowed with a sense of validation and appreciation that transcends mere monetary value. Every tip, every collect of a post, serves as a tangible indicator of the impact and value of their art, validating their talent and reaffirming their worth as creators.

While I don’t believe that artists should rely on validation from others, the reality is that many do, and therefore, the psychological impact of this validation on artists’ self-esteem and motivation cannot be overstated. We live in a world where self-doubt and imposter syndrome are prevalent, and Bonsai may offer a beacon of validation that illuminates the darkest corners of doubt and insecurity. Knowing that their work is not just seen but valued and appreciated by a community of like-minded individuals, artists find renewed confidence and inspiration to continue creating, fueled by the knowledge that their art matters.

Furthermore, this validation and recognition also foster a sense of connection and belonging within the Lens community. When a user collects a post or tips a creator, they are not just expressing appreciation for a piece of art; they are forging a bond—a connection that transcends the digital realm and enriches the lives of both creator and audience.

What many may not realize, what may seem superficial to some, is that this validation, for most artists, is not a fleeting moment of gratification but rather a lifeline; a source of sustenance that nourishes their souls and fuels their creative spirits.

Pablo Picasso once said, “The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.” When considering this statement in the context of the Lens x Bonsai marriage, we can see artists using it as their ally to continue washing away the dust of doubt and insecurity, knowing that their art has the power to uplift, inspire, and resonate with others.

And for those who may not identify as artists ( even though we are all artists at our core ), it's important to recognize the profound impact of our words and actions on the artists whose work enriches our lives. With each tip, and each collect, we reaffirm not only the value of art but also the importance of creativity in fostering connection, empathy, and understanding in an increasingly fragmented world.

Many people within the Lens community have described Bonsai as the “cultural token” of Lens, and upon reflecting on this perspective, I find truth in this assertion. Bonsai, for me at least, has evolved beyond a mere token; it has become the lifeblood coursing through the veins of Lens and its community, shaping its identity, ethos, and collective consciousness. It serves as a reflection of the values and aspirations of its community, influencing the types of content produced and the norms that govern interactions within this vibrant ecosystem.

What I perceive Bonsai doing is placing value on creativity, authenticity, and community. This shift in focus carries profound implications for the types of content thriving within the Lens ecosystem, fostering a culture of innovation, experimentation, and boundary-pushing creativity. However, it's important to note that Bonsai acts as the indirect catalyst for this change. While people ultimately shape the community's direction and retain control, psychologically, they tend to collect only certain posts and artworks—those that resonate with them. Not all content will become viral; only a select few will.

Perhaps the most significant reason why I see Bonsai emerging as a cultural token within the Lens ecosystem extends beyond its role as a catalyst for creative expression; it serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for a generation disillusioned by the homogenization and commodification of digital culture. Through the union of Lens and Bonsai, where authenticity reigns supreme and creativity knows no bounds, we are offered a glimpse of what's possible when communities unite to reclaim control over their digital destinies.

“The medium is the message.” – Marshall McLuhan

I encourage us to view Bonsai not solely as a medium for exchange but as a message—a testament to the transformative power of community, creativity, and collaboration. With the marriage of Bonsai and Lens as our guiding star, we embark on a journey of cultural exploration and discovery, fully aware that the possibilities are as boundless as our collective imagination.

Reflecting on the thoughts expressed above, I realize I may have written too extensively. Therefore, I will now conclude this journey and leave you with a few final words, and a duo of art and two remarkable creators.

Let us each take a moment to contemplate the profound impact of our collective actions and aspirations. Forget Bonsai or Lens for now; let's focus solely on this moment. With every tip, every collect, and every gesture of support, we nurture the seeds of creativity, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and inclusivity. We acknowledge the inherent value of every artist, every voice, and every story, celebrating the richness and diversity of our shared human experience.

With Bonsai and Lens, a new opportunity emerges for artists to flourish, and for creativity to be once more valued and cherished. Through this union, we can continue to cultivate creativity, amplify voices, and build a more vibrant and equitable world where every individual has the opportunity to thrive and shine.

Let us embark on a journey of discovery, connection, and collective empowerment, keeping in mind that the seeds we sow today will blossom into a future where creativity knows no bounds and possibilities are as limitless as our imagination.

Together, let us shape a brighter, more beautiful future for all.

*Additionally, I want to give an honorable mention to $pointless, another token within Lens ecosystem, the one that started it all. To understand why it is so fundamental in the ecosystem, I invite you to join Lens and discover its prowess for yourself.

*If you are new to Lens and haven't interacted with it before – it is now permissionless, anyone can join – I recommend using hey.xyz or Kaira for desktop and orb.app for mobile. If you don’t have Bonsai in your wallet, don’t worry. You can purchase it ( NOT FINANCIAL ADVICE ), or even better, earn it through your creations by simply setting your posts as collectibles on each of these apps ( this would be my choice ).

*Also, Bonsai is just one of many; there are others currently in existence, and undoubtedly, there will be numerous emerging in the future. However, at present, I perceive it as the most impactful among them.

Princess Je$yFries

Jessy be like: i want a Puppet wif fries

Jessy is someone I've been following since my early days in the Lens ecosystem, and it didn't take long for me to recognize her prowess in building her brand. I hesitate to delve into specifics about her approach and the way she builds her brand ( from my perspective ), as I believe the joy and satisfaction of discovering these insights firsthand will far surpass any description I could provide.

She's a creator whose content centers around fries, memes, or what many people consider to be “shitposting”; yet, it goes beyond it. In each of her creations, whether it's a video, a visual artwork, a simple text, or any other medium, you'll uncover facets of her identity and wisdom.

Jessy is one of those people I believe everyone, Lens user or not, should look up to and be inspired by. She excels in making her voice heard and valued. You don't need to emulate her exact methods; rather, you can draw inspiration from her journey and tailor the lessons learned to your own path.

You can begin this journey by following her on Lens and exploring her artwork on platforms like Zora or Foundation to gain a deeper understanding of what I'm referring to.

Furthermore, she is one of the kindest souls I’ve been blessed with in my journey!

Saudade

Saudade
Saudade

While in the process of creating this piece, my initial intention was singular, but upon reaching its completion, I found myself overwhelmed with a myriad of significances. It made me realize the multitude of facets of myself that I could see reflected within it. Yet, the underlying purpose remained unchanged. Through “Saudade” I aimed to create a piece that encourages the appreciation of individuality.

The man portrayed in the artwork has lived a life marked by sorrow and pain. Not because it was predetermined, but because he chose it. He sought to conform to societal expectations, yearning to fit in and be like and liked by others. However, in doing so, he sacrificed his own happiness and success, opting for sorrow over joy and defeat over triumph. While conformity may seem like the path to contentment, it is a fleeting illusion, one that fails to satisfy the soul.

My hope is that this piece serves as a poignant reminder for both myself and others. May it prompt us to embrace our uniqueness and authenticity, allowing ourselves to be who and what we truly are. May it inspire us to take control of our own narratives, becoming the authors of our stories rather than mere characters within them. May it serve as a poignant reminder to:

“Embrace your uniqueness, for in trying to conform, you risk defeat. To deny your true self is to surrender to a life of discontent.”

Otherwise, we risk embodying the essence of “Saudade” ourselves...

Kaleidoscope Wings

Princess Tutti is an artist whom I discovered through Jessy, and it was genuinely love at first sight. Her art resonated with me due to its unparalleled uniqueness. As a visual artist and generative art | creative coding creator, her works are truly mind-blowing. Among them, it's the generative & creative coding pieces that have left me in awe. The sheer talent and prowess displayed in her art genuinely boggle my mind. While some may perceive her artworks as expressing nothing, as is often the case with art, for me, it was an instant connection.

One of the reasons I urge you to follow her journey is my firm belief that her name will reverberate throughout the art world and beyond in the near future. Generative art seems poised to become the next frontier in artistic expression, and Princess Tutti, already immersed in this realm, is undoubtedly poised to make a significant impact.

I encourage you to follow her on Lens or Twitter, and if you remain skeptical about the impact of her art, I invite you to explore some of her creations ( Foundation & Objkt ) and witness her talent firsthand.

Anh

Anh
Anh

Anh is a vital part of the Visage collection that I started some time ago. The motive behind her creation was to craft something that could usher us into a realm of introspection and comprehension. Through her eyes, which seem to possess the wisdom of ages, she achieves just that.

Her gaze transcends the superficial, delving into the profound depths of the soul where true beauty resides. In her presence, we are reminded of the infinite layers of complexity that render each individual unique, each narrative worth sharing.

Anh serves as a testament to the inherent beauty inherent within every soul, surpassing cultural, background, and physical boundaries.

Thank you!

Have a blessed day!
