Beyond Sight.🌹

Looking beyond the obvious and being open-minded are principles I have always strived to apply in my own life. Lately, they've become mantras guiding my every action. The plethora of insights I've gained, not only about things but also about people, by embracing these principles has been truly transformative.

For many, understanding something or someone may seem nearly impossible, leading to quick judgments born out of ignorance. However, how many of us are willing to open our minds and explore different perspectives to genuinely comprehend the essence of an entity?

I believe it's time for a shift. Both individually and collectively, we need to cultivate open-mindedness to thrive. We must begin to view things from alternate angles. Allow me to share a short story that, in my opinion, exemplifies the importance of open-mindedness even further:

“In a humble village, six blind men were introduced to an enigmatic creature — an elephant that had strolled into their midst.

The first man, after touching its sinuous trunk, proclaimed that the beast was akin to a hefty snake.

The second man, feeling the hard, sharp tusk, declared the creature to be as formidable as a spear.

The third, with his hand upon the elephant's broad ear, likened it to an expansive fan.

The fourth, grasping the solid leg, was certain it resembled a sturdy tree.

The fifth, pressing against the elephant's massive side, compared it to an unyielding wall.

And the sixth man, upon handling the swaying tail, insisted the creature was no more than a rope.

Each man, entrenched in his perception, was completely convinced of his own rightness, dismissing the observations of his counterparts.”

What you've just read is an ancient parable dating back to the Tittha Sutta, a revered Buddhist text from around 500 B.C., titled “The Blind Men and the Elephant.” Now, I urge you to open your minds and view this parable from a fresh perspective to grasp its profound lesson. In the following lines, I'll offer my interpretation, acknowledging that each encounter with this tale reveals new insights.

The elephant serves as a metaphor for our world, illustrating how our understanding is limited to a mere fraction of available knowledge. Despite this, we boldly construct our worldview based on these limited perceptions. The complexities of life extend far beyond our narrow perspectives.

Recognizing this, we must nurture humility, embrace life's dynamism, and strive for constant enlightenment. It's tempting to remain in our comfort zones, clinging to outdated beliefs and hindering our growth. However, we must become aware of the world's ongoing evolution and adapt accordingly. Yet, our pride often blinds us to the inevitability of change and the imperative of ongoing learning. Only by humbly acknowledging our limitations can we truly embrace the transformative power of knowledge. In today's world, knowledge and information are not just advantageous; they are indispensable for meaningful action. Those equipped with information don't possess power solely because of the data itself; rather, it empowers them to adapt, breaking free from the narrow confines of a rigid perspective on life. They continually expand their horizons and redefine boundaries.

Our individual perspectives are inherently limited – it requires humility, not pride, to truly acknowledge this fact. Just as each blind man perceived the elephant solely through their tactile experiences, we too interpret the world and its people through the limited lens of our own biases, beliefs, and preconceptions. However, within each of us lies the potential for self-awareness and introspection, enabling us to recognize the constraints of our perception and strive for a more comprehensive understanding.

To cultivate the open-mindedness we urgently need, we must accept that our grasp of reality is inherently subjective and incomplete. There must be a paradigm shift where curiosity outweighs judgment. By doing so, we can appreciate that each new idea, experience, and perspective offers a distinct vantage point to comprehend the complexities of existence. Similar to the blind men gaining a holistic understanding of the elephant through sharing and synthesizing their individual experiences, we too must engage in dialogue, exchange, and collaboration. Through this collective effort, we can broaden our views and deepen our appreciation for the diverse tapestry of human knowledge and experience.

However, as I briefly mentioned earlier, possessing an open mind alone is not enough. We also need humility, which I see as the paramount trait enabling us to recognize our fallibility and accept the inherent uncertainties of life. Humility dispels the illusion of certainty, leading us to surrender to the ever-shifting currents of existence, understanding that true wisdom lies not in amassing knowledge but in acknowledging its limitations. The famous words of the philosopher Socrates, “I know that I know nothing,” is not, in my view, a declaration of ignorance but rather an expression of profound humility in the face of life's boundless mysteries.

Turning our focus to today’s world, which is marked by division, polarization, and tribalism, the imperative of nurturing open-mindedness and humility cannot be overstated. Only by transcending the confines of our perspectives and embracing the richness of human diversity can we hope to bridge the gulfs that separate us and cultivate a more compassionate, inclusive, and harmonious world – not only for ourselves but also for future generations.

We can also explore this from another angle, delving into the digital realm, which, whether we like it or not, has become the primary space we “inhabit”. Each technological leap continues to shrink the world, fostering unprecedented levels of interaction and exchange. However, it also exposes us to a dizzying array of perspectives, opinions, and worldviews. In this digital landscape, the ability to navigate complexity, ambiguity, and disagreement with grace and empathy is not merely a virtue but an essential need for personal and collective flourishing. This is another reason why I consider open-mindedness and humility imperative in today’s world.

Recently, I came across profound words from the French philosopher Voltaire that resonated deeply with me and influenced the creation of this piece: “Doubt is an uncomfortable condition, but certainty is a ridiculous one.” To embrace open-mindedness is to confront the discomfort of uncertainty and resist the inherent urge to cling to dogma or ideology when faced with complexity. It entails recognizing that truth is often elusive, multifaceted, and subject to change and that our grasp of it is always provisional and incomplete. Open-mindedness is about being receptive to ideas that challenge our preconceptions, shake our beliefs, and broaden our understanding of the world. It involves approaching every encounter with curiosity and a genuine eagerness to learn and evolve.

However, open-mindedness, without humility, lacks its necessary complement. Without this vital virtue, what initially appears as a boon can swiftly turn into a bane, morphing into arrogance, self-righteousness, or veiled close-mindedness. Humility serves as the foundation upon which open-mindedness flourishes, allowing us to recognize our own fallibility and approach every interaction with an attitude of openness, curiosity, and respect. It prompts us to listen more than we speak, to prioritize understanding over victory, and to acknowledge that we have as much to glean from others as they do from us.

Open-mindedness and humility form a powerful couple, perhaps one of the most powerful combinations an individual can possess. They are indispensable tools capable of healing wounds, bridging chasms, and fostering profound understanding. It is this collaboration that infuses dialogue, empathy, and mutual respect with vitality, enabling us to transcend the limitations of our own stances and form meaningful connections with those who may seem “different” from us. Through this partnership, we come to recognize the inherent dignity and worth of every human being, regardless of their background, beliefs, or opinions. It is through this unity that we realize, despite our differences, that we are fundamentally the same; though we are many, we are, in essence, one.

In our increasingly interconnected and interdependent world, the ability to tolerate and engage with difference isn't solely a moral imperative; it's a “practical” necessity for navigating the intricate tapestry of our shared existence. It is only by embracing diversity, fostering dialogue, and cultivating a spirit of open-mindedness and humility that we can hope to build a more just, compassionate, and sustainable world for all.

So let us heed the timeless wisdom of the Blind Men and the Elephant, and embark upon our own journey of self-discovery and enlightenment. Let us strive to cultivate open minds and humble hearts, and in doing so, unlock the boundless potential of the human spirit to transcend, transform, and transcend once more.

Remember, the world is our elephant — vast, diverse, and waiting for us to explore it. Only through humility and openness can we begin to understand its full grandeur.

Infinite Reach

Infinite Reach is my ode to the boundless potential of open-mindedness and humility. As the hand stretches towards the horizon, it symbolizes our willingness to transcend limitations and embrace the vastness of possibility. This piece reminds us of the interconnectedness of all things and the humbling truth that our perspectives are but a fragment of the greater whole. Through humility, we find the courage to explore, learn, and grow, embracing diversity and the beauty of the unknown.

Jacob Carson

Summertime Sadness
Summertime Sadness

Jacob is an artist whom I discovered some time ago during the early stages of my exploration into Web 3. His “oil pastels” creations immediately captivated me, and I was fortunate enough to acquire one of his early pieces on the blockchain—titled “Let It Burn,” if memory serves me correctly. Since then, I've found myself increasingly drawn to his artistic journey. It's a true pleasure to witness his oil pastel creations, as I admire both the themes he explores and the seamless integration of skate culture into his work, resulting in mesmerizing pieces.

One aspect of Jacob's art that I particularly appreciate, aside from the artwork itself, is his use of words to provide additional context to each piece. Upon visiting his Foundation page and exploring his collection, you'll find accompanying narratives that enrich the meaning of each creation. Sometimes these narratives offer insights into the materials used or the symbolism behind the piece, but each time, they serve as a beautiful complement that elevates the artwork.

I invite you to explore Jacob's work and follow his journey, as I perceive him as a curious and open-minded artist who consistently utilizes his tools to breathe life into his visions. Among “oil pastel” artists, his work resonates with me the most, and I'm sure you'll find it equally captivating!

“Душу й тіло ми положим за нашу свободу”

On my Twitter, there's a special list dedicated to Art, a digital haven where I continuously add discoveries. There's something truly magical about losing myself in the creations of others, and it's during one of these exploratory moments that I stumbled upon Sasha. A mere glimpse at her Foundation page was all it took for me to decide to introduce her to you.

Coming from Ukraine, Sasha is an illustrator whom I consider among the best. Much like Jacob, what sets her apart is her ability to infuse each piece with depth and context through brief phrases or stories. While her creations alone are remarkably evocative, it's the added layer of narrative that truly elevates her work. As I immerse myself in her art, I find myself conjuring various images in my mind, only to be further enchanted when I delve into the thoughts she seeks to express through her creations.

Though it's been some time since Sasha's last active engagement, her art continues to live on, casting its spell and leaving a lasting impact. I urge you to explore her artistry, to open your mind to the messages she conveys through her work, and to allow your spirit to be enraptured by its beauty. Despite her recent absence, I encourage you to follow her journey as well – who knows when she'll resurface, unveiling yet another masterpiece to enrich our lives.

Thank you!

Have a great day!
